International Recycling Group Teams Up with Erie SeaWolves for Lower East Side Neighborhood Trash Pick up

IRG Continues Investing in Community, Environment through Second Annual Earth Day Clean Up

Erie, PA (April 22, 2022) — International Recycling Group (IRG), a local company committed to

tackling the plastic waste crisis by launching a recycling revolution in Erie, along with its sister company newBin, hosted its 2nd annual Earth Day clean up teaming up with the Erie Seawolves and Wm. T. Spaeder Company, kicking off at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home. The volunteer-driven lower East Side neighborhood cleanup, started with a visit to the residents of the Soldiers and Sailors Home.

At a press conference attended by local elected officials, Founder and Chairman Mitch Hecht talked about IRG’s progress and their plans to change plastics recycling for generations to come. The organization which has created a zero-landfill solution to any and all post-use plastics, is expected to break ground next spring on the former Hammermill Paper site on East Lake Road.

“Earth Day is just one day a year, but at IRG Earth Day is every day,” said Hecht. “We are proud to call ourselves Erieites and be joined by members of the SeaWolves, Wm. T. Spaeder, Plastek Group, elected officials, and community members all committed to helping drive the recycling revolution for a cleaner, greener country.”

“The Erie SeaWolves are proud to partner with IRG to make a difference in the Erie community,” said Erie SeaWolves President Greg Coleman. “There are so many great things happening in the Erie region, and we love when we can partner with a community-minded company like IRG to make Erie an even better place to live, work, and play.”

“We at the Wm. T. Spaeder Company are very proud that IRG invited us to be a part of this annual event once again,” said Tom Kaspick, Sales Manager, Wm. T. Spaeder. “It is wonderful opportunity to bring together other local companies and residents to see what kind of positive change a little effort and a little time can make in our community.

“We believe that people and companies putting their best foot forward and taking pride in where we live contributes to making our city and our planet a better place.”

The country’s first SuperPRF™ (“PRF” = Plastics Recovery Facility) will revolutionize the recycling of plastics by accepting all forms of post-use plastics, including cups, lids, tubs, single-use plastics, drink containers, and milk cartons from residential and commercial sources. Right now, almost two-thirds of the plastic Erie households generate are not accepted for recycling.  IRG, with its sister company, newBin, promise to ensure not a pound of plastic goes into landfill or the environment.

About International Recycling Group (IRG)

International Recycling Group (IRG) is designing the country’s largest plastics recycling plant to process all types and grades of plastic scrap. In the United States, according to EPA estimates, less than 9% of all plastics that enter the municipal solid waste ("MSW") stream are recycled. Combined with plastic scrap generated by industrial and commercial industries, we estimate that over 50 million tons annually of plastic scrap are destined for landfills. Plastic scrap has considerable potential to be repurposed and IRG plans to efficiently utilize this untapped resource. Located on the US Great Lakes, IRG’s new “SuperPRF” will be able to accept ALL types of plastic—not just bottles (the “#1s and #2s”). Thus, “single streaming,” or combining all plastics into a recycling bin or cart for pickup, will now be economically viable.
